Task 2- Research into existing products: Music videos

Music video analysis of Bands from different era's

Boy bands:

Take That back for good-1994:
-       Black and white effects with spotlights which focus on each of the singers face to show the focus is on each off them when its there turn to sing, the spotlight are used as props.
-       The prop of rain coupled with the black and white effect creates a negative mood, which fits the lyrics.
-       The dance moves are quite unique helping them stand out, dancing in the rain is a visual effect and is exaggerated by the spotlights.
-       The close ups of each member helps to associate the voice to the face, and they all help portray the singers emotions. They look somber fitting the depressing setting and props.
-       Costumes are winter clothing, which fits the weather, and emotion created of cold and depression.
-       The editing of dissolves from one member to another shows the continuity of the group and song.

One Direction live while we’re young-2012:
-       Costumes- the clothes they are very casual clothing helping them be relatable.
-       Props- car they are driving is very fact pace which fits the stereotypical idea of a man. The summer activities fit the song lyrics of the fun factor.
-       “Live while we’re young” the actors used in the video fit the lyrics and they are all the younger generation.
-       Dance routines are very simple making them easy to mimic.
-       Close ups of the singer faces making it easy to associate the voice to the face.
Both videos I analyzed were from famous boy bands from different generations. However there were similarities to the videos such as the use of close ups to focus on each of the member’s faces. However, there were differences presented such as the dance routines. Take That’s music video doesn’t contain a big dance routine. Whereas, one direction “live while we’re young” does contain a dance routine indicating that boy band videos have changed over time as they contain more dance routines to make the song more catchy and relatable making it easy to mimic.

Girl bands:

Spice Girls Mama- 1995:
-       Archive video footage that relates to each singer.
-       Costumes: fitting to the fashion at the time and also fits each of there personalities.
-       Props of the stool indicates the slow tone of the song.
-       Audience dancing their dance moves indicating they are commonly associated with the sing they are catchy and relatable.
- Spotlight on each singer so how each are a big significance to the band.

The Saturdays Gentleman- 2013:
-       Setting- garden flowers presents feminine taste of the girl band, this juxtaposes the poker setting later on in the video fitting the lyrics of being a gentleman as poker is stereotypical to men.
-       Costumes- the outfits are very similar showing the unity of the group as they are as one.  The costume when they are dressed as males show the intermingling of gender, which fits the song lyrics.
-       The use of the spotlights on each of the singers shows they are the main focus.
-       Props of jewelry and extravagant clothing shows the women’s luxuries as opposed to the simpler style of the poker game costumes.
-       The women are doing domestic jobs in the garden, which fits the domestic stereotype fitting the lyrics “1950’s”.
-       Dance moves all synchronized.
Both videos I analyzed were from famous girl bands but from different generations. They both shared similar music video conventions such as the dance moves used. They were simple and catchy making it simple for fans to recreate it.  However, there are differences such as the costumes as The Saturdays clothing is more extravagant as opposed to the spice girls being more normal and relatable to their fans.
