Task 2- Research into existing products: Music- CD

Analysis of Artist's CD's

Once I had decided to create a music video as my production I needed to research into existing artifacts in order to analyse them and see what I feel works well and what conventions I may want to include.

Beyonce "4":
These images show the artist Beyoncé’s CD album of “4”. The front cover is very bold and eye-catching. The pale nude colour of the cover makes Beyoncé stand out and be the main focus of
attention. In addition, her striking pose creates edgy, fierce vibes which are conventions people associate with Beyoncé. The costume style of the front image creates sex appeal to both the female and male audience as women will respect and aspire to be like her and it will grab male attention, the neutral background also help when marketing the product to the two genders as it appeals to a wide range of audiences. The side of the CD cover has the same back ground as the back of the CD, it has the word Beyoncé and the name of the album on it, and it’s very simple and useful as people can easily identify what album it is. In addition, if the CD is placed on its side when it’s up for sale in a shop elope won’t see the cover first but the side is the focus so having the artists name and album will make it easy to identify.
The back of the CD has a neutral back ground of the sky and the top of a building. This works well with Beyoncé’s striking pose and black costume as she stands out as opposed to the background taking over. Even though she isn’t in the centre of the back cover she is very dominate talking over the back cover. The artists name and album is written in bold black writing at the top to attract attention to whose album it is. The title is also underlined creating a striking feature to attract the masses. The bottom left of the corner has the barcode which is the normal location to where it’s found on other products. Above the barcode are the songs included on the CD. The song titles are also written in black to make the, stand out on the neutral background.  The CD itself is a very shocking red with a big bold B on its standing for Beyoncé. This CD is different to the CD cover however it is very bold and striking like the CD cover. This CD cover is very
effective due to the striking poses and colour palette it using. The neutral colour is subtle but every bold when paired with Beyoncé’s presence and bold black writing. The CD also provides the music companies name “Sony music” that were responsible for this album. This provides great adverting and also will make people associate Beyoncé with this record company.
